  • Distinguished International Scholar Award, The University of Rhode Island.
  • 2008-13. Advisor to the United Nations al-Qaeda and Taliban Monitoring Team.
  • Member of the Rome Memorandum United Nations Expert Group. The Rome Memorandum seeks to identify Guiding Principles that can potentially serve as the foundation for states’ Policies and Practices for Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Violent Extremist Offenders. (since 2012).
  • Member of the ESRC Peer Review Committee.
  • Visiting Professor at the ICSR, College of War, King’s College, The University of London, 2014.
  • Visiting Professor, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, 2010.
  • Visiting Professor, the University of Columbia, School of Law and Economics (Personal invitation by Joseph Stieglitz, the former head of Bill Clinton’s Economic Council, Chief Economist at World Bank, and a laureate). September 2011.
